BABS is the British and American Benevolent Society, founded in 1880 with the mission of supporting elderly people in need of ongoing care and companionship. A Home where our residents can live with dignity, peace, and harmony, surrounded by warmth, respect, and personalized attention.
We are committed to performing at the highest level, continuously improving our services to meet and exceed the needs of our residents.
We operate with honesty, transparency and strong moral principles, always honoring our commitments and upholding the trust placed in us.
Rooted in tradition, we primarily serve the British and American communities while extending a warm welcome to all others.
We aim to lead by example, fostering an environment where innovation, empathy and service excellence flourish.
Through collaboration and mutual respect, our dedicated team works together to ensure that every resident receives the best possible care and attention.
At BABS, we offer more than just a residence — we provide a true home for older adults who seek to live with peace of mind, dignity, and quality of life. Located in the Villa Devoto neighborhood, our building combines the serenity of a green setting with the convenience and connectivity of the city.
We have spacious gardens, a tree-lined courtyard, and a terrace that invite residents to enjoy fresh air, relaxation, and social interaction. Rooms — whether individual, double, or designed for couples — are bright and well-ventilated. Additionally, each resident has the opportunity to personalize their space by adding paintings, or small pieces of furniture to make it feel more like their own.
Our facilities include a dining room for 80 people with round tables, reading lounges, TV areas, and recreational spaces. BABS offers specialized care for residents who are unable to care for themselves and require constant supervision, including those living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
We also promote active lifestyles through a wide variety of activities: board games, movie screenings, bingo, canasta, workshops, memory groups and cultural outings.
Everything at BABS is designed to make our residents feel comfortable, supported, and valued — because we believe that at every stage of life, we deserve to live with joy, care and a sense of belonging.

The British and American Benevolent Society (BABS) was founded in 1880. It was started in the city of Buenos Aires through the joint initiative of British and U.S. Community Affairs representatives: the Hon. Mr. Egerton (British Chargé d’Affaires) and General Osborne (U.S. Minister). Their mission was to provide support to members of the English-speaking community in need.
Since its foundation, the Ambassadors of the United Kingdom and the United States have served as Honorary Presidents of the organization, reflecting its binational roots and ongoing spirit of solidarity.
At BABS, we are proud of our long and meaningful heritage of care:
In 1910, Sunset House was established by philanthropist James Begg as a residence for 30 senior ladies. For over five decades, it provided warmth, security, and companionship until its closure in 1967.
In 1941, Robin Stuart Hostel opened its doors thanks to the initiative of Robin Stuart O.B.E., offering a home for 44 gentlemen. This hostel remained active until 1970.
Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive and modern facility, Harold Berzon O.B.E. founded the BABS Home in Villa Devoto in 1967. Designed to accommodate 70 residents — both ladies and gentlemen — the new home brought together the spirit of the previous institutions under one roof, surrounded by tranquil gardens in a suburban setting within the city.
Since then, BABS has continued to honor its founding mission: to provide elderly residents with the dignity, care, and a sense of community they deserve.
